Position

Mr. Scheler is a senior partner of the Restructuring and Insolvency Department.

In his work, Mr. Scheler leads teams attending to investment in, recourse related to and the financial restructuring and rehabilitation of, complex and often distressed businesses either out-of-court or in connection with formal restructuring and insolvency proceedings in the United States and abroad. Mr. Scheler represents parties seeking to invest in and/or acquire the assets and businesses of financially troubled and other companies, buyers and sellers of distressed securities and businesses, financial institutions that are lenders to and investors in financially troubled companies, and corporate debtors, creditors' committees, bondholders' committees, equity holders' committees and trustees.

Drawing upon his substantial experience in corporate boardrooms and judicial proceedings, Mr. Scheler acts as outside general counsel and strategic adviser to financially strong corporate and institutional clients in connection with financings and capital market transactions, including the issuance and exchange of debt and equity securities and the structuring and implementation of mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. Mr. Scheler also represents and provides corporate finance and strategic planning advice to corporate, institutional and governmental clients. Mr. Scheler's experience on some of the largest and most complex transactions — including leveraged buyouts, strategic mergers and capital markets transactions — has given Mr. Scheler perspective and insight into realizing maximum value from and flexibility for businesses and assets. Mr. Scheler also serves as a trustee of certain complex trusts and as an advisor to such trusts.

Career

Mr. Scheler writes on subjects related to his experience and is a frequent speaker at seminars for clients and fellow professionals. He is a contributing author for Collier on Bankruptcy and a regular guest lecturer for a course on Investing in Distressed Securities taught by Professor Allan Brown at the New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Mr. Scheler has also been a guest lecturer at numerous other law and business schools including the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University, the School of Law at St. John’s University and New York Law School.

Memberships

Mr. Scheler is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Mr. Scheler is admitted to practice in New York State and the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and has appeared in courtrooms throughout the United States.

Mr. Scheler serves as a member of the Board (and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board) of The Honorable Tina Brozman Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research (a/k/a Tina’s Wish). For more than eight years, Mr. Scheler served in leadership positions for Her Justice (formerly known as inMotion), including as Chair of the Board of Directors. As Chair Emeritus of Her Justice, Mr. Scheler now serves on the Senior Leadership Council. Mr. Scheler is also a long-standing member of the Leadership Committee for the Bankruptcy and Reorganization Group of UJA Federation. Mr. Scheler has also served as a member of the Boards of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, American Friends of Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, and the Village of Larchmont Public Library and as a member of the Capital Campaign Committee of Larchmont Manor Park.

Mr. Scheler serves as Trustee Emeritus of his undergraduate alma mater, Lehigh University and Chair Emeritus of the Dean’s Advisory Board for his law school alma mater the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.

Education

Mr. Scheler received his JD from Hofstra University School of Law in 1977 and his BA from Lehigh University in 1974, with high honors. Mr. Scheler is a recipient of a Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa degree conferred by Monmouth University and served as commencement speaker for Monmouth's Class of 2015.
