Māris Vainovskis is a Senior Partner at Eversheds Sutherland Riga office, heading the Banking and Finance as well as the Corporate and Commercial practice groups.  He has more than 18 years of legal experience in banking and finance, commercial and company law, IT law, and EU law.

Māris is especially well-known for his M&A work. During his many years of legal experience, he has been involved in the majority of the largest and most complex M&A projects in the country.  He has acted in an advisory capacity in over 250 M&A sector deals and advised sellers and buyers, both foreign and domestic, not only on mergers and acquisitions but also on complex reorganisations, restructurings, and asset deals.

Māris also has extensive experience in commercial law matters. He has led teams in over 70 major corporate and commercial sector deals.

Maris is well recognized amongst capital market participants and the vast majority of credit institutions operating in Latvia due to his extensive experience in a number of capital market transactions, regulatory and compliance matters as well as facilitation of regulatory dialogue between the market participants and supervisory authorities. Notably, Maris has been leading a number of projects concerning credit risk and capital adequacy requirements for credit institutions, anti-money laundering procedures, shareholders’ liabilities, and restructuring matters.

Māris is a member of the Latvian Bar Association and the Advisory Council of the Latvian Company Register. He is an active member of the Foreign Investors’ Council in Latvia (FICIL) where he heads working groups on court system efficiency as well as investment security and protection. He lectures regularly at the Baltic Institute of Corporate Governance (BICG) Board Member Education program.

In the last couple of years alone Māris has participated in several major initiatives aimed at enhancing the corporate governance of businesses in Latvia. To name a few, he has been contributing to the Advisory Board for the Management of Municipal Capital Companies and Shares, established by the Riga City Council as well as to the Corporate Governance Advisory Board of the Ministry of Justice of Latvia and developing the NASDAQ OMX Riga Corporate Governance Code together with the Baltic Institute for Corporate Governance, and others.

He holds an LL.M. degree from the University of Latvia and has been a PhD candidate since 2003. In 2004, he obtained an International Practice Diploma in International Mergers and Acquisitions and in 2014 he graduated from the Summer School for International Financial Law in Oxford, UK.
