Work Department

Neil specialises in contentious and non-contentious media related work.

He advises on all aspects of copyright law and in particular in relation to music. Neil had day to day responsibility for handling the dispute between Apple Corps and Apple Computer over the right to use the word Apple in relation to music downloads. He was also part of the team that successfully defended Universal-Island and the Bob Marley Estate in an action brought by a member of the Wailers in respect of the right to exploit Bob Marley and the Wailers' recordings, involving complex contractual, copyright and performer's rights issues.

Neil's non-contentious practice includes advising in respect of recording contracts, music publishing agreements, tour agreements, producer agreements, broadcast agreements, counterfeiting and piracy, merchandising agreements, sponsorship agreements and licence agreements. By way of examples Neil has recently advised on the re-release of two major artists' back catalogue (including digital exploitation and new media rights); the international distribution and broadcast of a television show; the design, operation and outsourcing of a major recording artist's website; the production of a feature film; the production of a television advertisement; the sponsorship of an England cricketer; a modelling agreement for a major clothing retailer; a major artist's European tour; the acquisition of an independent television production company; and the acquisition of a television channel.
