Work Department
Kate heads up the Branding Group at Eversheds Sutherland in the UK.
Since qualifying as a solicitor in 1998, Kate has worked in Eversheds Sutherland's IP Group. For many years, Kate specialised in the field of contentious intellectual property and, over the years, she has been involved in many reported cases, including the landmark trade mark decision in the Court of Appeal in the Specsavers v Asda litigation and one of the first registered design cases which was determined by the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.
Kate has dual qualified as a trade mark attorney and is responsible for the Branding Group. Her background in contentious intellectual property matters complements her trade mark attorney practice such that Kate is uniquely qualified within Eversheds Sutherland to provide all-round branding advice to clients.
Kate provides advice to a large number of household names and is responsible for the management of global trade mark portfolios for many clients. She regularly advises clients in relation to trade mark selection, international trade mark and design clearance programmes and filing strategies, the prosecution of trade mark and design applications around the world (including under the International Registration system).
She also regularly advises clients in connection with trade mark registry proceedings, representing clients before the UK, Irish and EU Intellectual Property Offices. With her substantial IP experience, Kate provides clients with a broad understanding of branding issues and offers clients strategic advice on both the issues of brand protection and brand enforcement.
She has also built up a substantial reputation for dealing with brand enforcement issues on the internet and regularly advises clients in connection with domain name registration and recovery strategies, including prosecuting complaints under the UDRP and Nominet's Dispute Resolution Service.
