Position
Ian is a Partner in the Nuclear Team at Burges Salmon. Following his time as Deputy General Counsel for EDF Energy’s nuclear new build business in the UK between 2010 - 2015 working on the Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C and Bradwell B new nuclear projects, he is one of the few private practice lawyers in the UK with experience in developing a new nuclear power station under the current UK regulatory regime.
Since returning to private practice he has worked on a number of high profile nuclear new build and other nuclear projects both in the UK and internationally including a number of international SMR projects.
Ian advises sponsors, developers, technology vendors, operators, regulators, nuclear insurers, government departments, funders and contractors on all aspects of UK, European and international nuclear law.
Ian's expertise includes advising on:
- Nuclear regulatory frameworks in the UK and emerging nuclear countries, including providing nuclear law training and drafting nuclear legislation;
- The legal aspects of Safety, Security, Safeguards and Liability - including nuclear third party liability insurance;
- The licensing of nuclear installations - including the licensing of nuclear fusion and small modular reactors in the UK and abroad;
- Nuclear fuel supply;
- Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel management and disposal;
- The transport of nuclear and radioactive materials;
- Export controls;
- The requirements of the Euratom Treaty and its associated Directives and Regulations;
- Project arrangements for the deployment of small and advanced modular reactors; and
- Nuclear Co-operation Agreements between states
