Career

Mr. de Icaza has worked on the most innovative and complex real estate transactions and has actively represented major industrial groups, real estate investment trusts, development companies and private equity funds, involved in the industrial, tourism, retail and housing sectors, requiring environmental, real estate and transactional advice for their Mexican ventures.

On the Environmental side he represents clients in a wide scope of regulatory and transactional matters throughout Mexico arising under Federal, State and Municipal environmental laws, regulations and standards.  He also advises on legal environmental aspects of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.

Mr. de Icaza has over 20 years of experience within both sectors. He has been involved in several first-of-its-kind transactions, and some of the largest deals in Mexico’s history.

Mr. De Icaza was appointed District Council Chair of the Urban Land Institute for Mexico for the period July 2020 – June 2023. The Urban Land Institute (ULI; www.uli.org) is the oldest and most extensive multidisciplinary network of real estate and land use experts in the world, organized as an international non-profit research and education institute, whose mission is to provide responsible land use leadership and create and sustain prosperous communities around the world.  Mr. de Icaza is also a permanent member of the Sustainable Development Council of the ULI, which, among others, focuses in advancing the sustainability and ESG agenda throughout the real estate sector.

Over the past decade, he has been consistently ranked or cited as Band 1, Tier 1 or equivalent by several publications including Who’s Who Legal, Practical Law Company, Chambers and Partners Latin America, Latin Lawyer 250 and The Legal 500.

He is a frequent speaker on real estate, environmental, sustainability and ESG matters and has authored several articles on such legal subjects.  He has also been a Professor at Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (TEC), where he has taught Environmental Law and Sustainable Development.

Education

He received his law degree (JD) from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico City in 1997 and studied his Master of Laws degree (LL.M) at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1999-2000. He studied a Post-Graduate Course on International Commercial Arbitration in 1997 at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City, and a Post-Graduate Course on Environmental Law, in 1998, at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico City.
