Thomas Moloney

Position

Thomas J. Moloney is a partner of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, based in the New York office. His practice focuses on big cases and complex dispute resolution including derivatives, bankruptcy, ERISA, securities, M&A, antitrust, and commercial litigation. He has lectured and written extensively on litigation and bankruptcy topics, including on the subjects of electronic discovery and derivatives litigation, including as co-author of the new chapter on Derivatives Litigation in the forthcoming Third Edition of the treatise Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts.

Career

Mr. Moloney began work at the firm in 1976 and became a partner in 1984. Mr. Moloney is the former Chairman of the Committee on Legal Assistance of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and is the Chairman of the Business Advisory Council for Washington Irving, a New York City Public High School. For his work with the high school, Mr. Moloney has received several honors, including the City of New York’s Certificate of Recognition, the Brooke Russell Astor Award Special Citation and the Cus D’Amato Community Service Neighborhood Hero award. Mr. Moloney was recently appointed by the Mayor of New York to the City’s Workforce Improvement Board. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and a former assistant counsel to the Governor’s Judicial Nominating Committee.

Memberships

Mr. Moloney is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and is admitted to practice before a variety of State and Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second, Third and Fourth Circuits, and the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. Mr. Moloney is also a former member of the Court-appointed mediation panels for the Eastern District of New York and the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Education

Mr. Moloney received his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law in 1976, where he graduated cum laude and was an editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. Moloney received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College in 1973.
