Career

Johan is an expert in insurance, re-insurance, medical schemes, pension fund law and other aspects of financial sector laws which impacts financial institutions. His key clients include some of the largest financial conglomerates (being insurance, banking and financial services groups) in South Africa and he regularly advises clients such as the Old Mutual Group, the Momentum Metropolitan Group, the Standard Bank Group, the Liberty Group, the Hollard Group and the Sanlam Group. He has advised on restructuring of insurance groups, the transferring of insurance portfolios from one insurer to another and has vast experience in establishing and advising cell captive insurers in South Africa.  He has further advised on and drafted the agreements required for the creation of some of the largest banc-assurance relationships between large banks and insurers in South Africa.​​ He also regularly drafts linked and smooth bonus policies that are used as alternative commercial vehicles for spreading of risk and advises on all aspects of financial services regulation as it relates to financial institutions and their interactions - both locally and abroad. Johan is a trustee of a provident fund and regularly advises retirement funds regarding their interaction with insurance companies, regulation 28 aspects, fund linked policies and in respect of underwritten funds their relationship with insurers and administrators.​
