Career

Mpumelelo specialises in all aspects of employment and labour law as well as selected mine, health and occupational safety law as well as litigation and dispute resolution. He advises and represents clients across a variety of sectors, including banking, manufacturing, medical, mining, petroleum, logistics and telecommunications.

Mpumelelo has been involved in proceedings before different courts (including the Constitutional Court) as well as employment and labour law tribunals, including the International Labour Organisation (ILO). He has also advised and represented on some landmark matters – including successfully defending a challenge to the constitutionality of sections 23(1)(d) and 189(1) of the Labour Relations Act, which subsequently was recognised by the African Legal Awards in 2020 and received the Employment Team of the Year Award. He also advised in successfully obtaining a declaration that the work done by team leaders and mud-guards in tailings dams as an essential service. This was a tailings and mining industry first.​​​​
