Career

Patrick specialises in international trade, transport and insurance law, dealing with both contentious and non-contentious aspects of matters involving, among other things, sale and trade agreements, contracts of carriage, marine and non-marine insurance, arrests and attachments of ships and other property as security for maritime claims, including mortgage foreclosures, and the purchase and sale of ships, as well as dealing with ships in distress and marine casualties.  Patrick deals with cargo claims, hull claims, ship building and repair (with particular focus on motor and sailing yachts), marine casualties, places of refuge, marine pollution, salvage and towage, and bunker disputes and claims.  Patrick is the past President of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa (MLA), a board member of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and the head of IBIA in Africa.  He is a member of the International Bar Association, Maritime & Transport Law Committee, and has represented the South African MLA at the Comité Maritime International since 2008 and is a member of the CMI 'Implementation of International Conventions and Promotion of Maritime Conventions' international working group. He is a guest lecturer and external examiner at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal to LLM students and an external examiner of post graduate students at the University of Cape Town. He is ranked by Chambers Global, Who's Who Legal and as one the 6 leading Shipping & Transpor​t lawyers in South Africa by The Legal 500 2019. He is also the pro bono lawyer for the National Sea Rescue Institute and is the current South African Class A ORC National and Western Province champion keelboat skipper.​
