Career

Asmita is an expert in human rights law. She has extensive experience in matters relating to administrative, constitutional, land reform, employment equity and labour law. Her expertise extends to delictual claims and local government matters. She has run several ground-breaking cases relating to women's and children's rights as well as the rule of law and has advised and represented numerous communities on land issues. Asmita has also litigated extensively against the State in administrative law and delictual claims. Prior to joining Webber Wentzel, she worked for the Legal Resources Centre and within the local government structures where she served a five-year term as elected councillor. Asmita has acted as pro bono lawyer for the Wits Law Clinic and as principal and mentor to several candidate attorneys while at the Legal Resources Centre. She has also served as non-executive director of the Rural Housing Land Fund. Prior to joining Webber Wentzel, Asmita practised as an advocate and was a member of the Johannesburg Bar.
