John Padgett

Position
John Padgett is the former office managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Norfolk office and the founding leader of its Transportation Industry Team. He has extensive experience in providing a wide range of services to corporate and transportation clients.
John is experienced in counseling public and private businesses, partnerships and limited liability corporations with matters involving mergers and acquisitions, and transportation issues. He also has experience with the transportation and terminal operating industries and a unique perspective on all modes of transportation. He works with corporations in creating strategies to strengthen its supply chain, to mitigate international risks and to understand the challenges of international trade.
John advises corporations in the nuances of international trade and U.S. customs’ compliance issues and provides litigation support to the firm’s corporate and maritime clients. He has worked with international terminal operators in creating the largest privately held cargo terminal in North America, has worked on the salvage of the Titanic and has been on the cutting edge of the offshore wind initiatives. He has been selected by his peers as one of the best corporate and transportation attorneys in a wide range of publications and surveys.

(Leading partners)McGuireWoods LLP‘s ‘consistently available’ transportation, shipping, maritime and regulatory team acts for terminal operators, transportation authorities, beneficial cargo owners, commodity traders, carriers, financial institutions, and vessel owners and charterers on a vast array of shipping matters. The team consistently advises on regulatory compliance with the Jones Act, as well as shipping-related international trade issues (including the shipping regulations that determine how shippers and carriers can interact). Its practice also encompasses assistance to retailers with licensing and regulatory issues, in relation to Ocean Transportation Intermediaries-related matters; and it assists beneficial cargo owners with new enforcement remedies, which are available through the Federal Maritime Commission and the Ocean Shipping Reform Act. Heading up the team, Norfolk-based John Padgett is experienced in representing tug boat companies, freight forwarders, freight consolidators, and shipping and trucking companies; and Bryan Brantley in Pittsburgh is an experienced transportation-related litigator. In September 2023, Jeanne Noonan left the firm.
