Career
Steve Derringer represents clients in federal, and state courts throughout the United States. Steve's trial practice encompasses a broad range of litigation, including product liability, mass torts, intellectual property, class actions, and general commercial disputes. Each of these substantive areas benefits from Steve's ability to explain and communicate complex scientific or technical information to jurors, judges, and arbitrators.
The range of Steve’s trial practice is reflected in his recent representations. In 2019 and 2023, Steve was lead trial counsel (together with his partner John Hughes) in patent infringement cases where he and the trial team obtained two separate $100+ million plaintiff verdicts. In 2022, Steve was lead trial counsel defending Walgreens in two cases brought by state attorneys general alleging that Walgreens’ dispensing of prescription opioid medications caused a public nuisance.
Steve thrives at identifying and implementing trial and case-management strategies that drive cases toward resolution in a manner that is consistent with his client's business needs. This approach has earned Steve recognition as a Client Service All-Star in the BTI Consulting Group's listing of attorneys "who drive superior client relationships."
Following his graduation from Yale Law School, Steve clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Steve joined Bartlit Beck in 1997 and became a partner in 2001.
