Michael Saarinen is a partner in the Investment Funds practice. Michael represents a diverse group of fund sponsors, from small, closely held startup businesses to global financial institutions. He advises on the formation and operation of a wide range of fund products, including traditional private equity buyout funds, hedge funds, venture capital funds, real estate funds, credit funds, and customized investment vehicles such as single-investor funds, managed accounts, single-asset funds, and hybrid funds. Michael also counsels clients on regulatory and compliance issues, examination and enforcement matters, compensation arrangements, strategic management company M&A transactions, succession planning, and governance.
Michael was recently named the exclusive winner of the Lexology 2020 Client Choice Award for Private Funds in New York and has been honored by Private Funds Management as one of the “30 Most Influential Private Equity Lawyers Under the Age of 40.” In addition, Michael has been recognized by legal rankings guides including The Legal 500 United States and Who’s Who Legal for his private fund expertise.

Lowenstein Sandler LLP stands out for its comprehensive offering in the venture capital funds space, including start-up and successor funds, fund of funds and venture secondary funds. The team advises fund managers on the formation and launch of funds, the drafting and negotiating of documentation, such as side letter agreements and on regulatory issues. The group is split across New York and New Jersey and is led by investment management co-chairs Robert Minion, Scott Moss and Marie DeFalco. DeFalco handles venture capital funds, joint ventures and various company agreements, frequently also on international mandates. Both Ekwutozia Nwabuzor und Marc Lomasky in New York saw a busy 2023. Among the new joiners to the team were Jonathan Danziger, who joined the firm from Glenview Capital Management and Kevin Zadourian who joined from Glazer Capital, both in September 2023 as well as Michael Saarinen who joined from Shearman & Sterling LLP in the following month. Max Karpel left the firm in August 2023, and former practice head Elaine Hughes also departed the firm in September 2023.
