Position

Kenny Paton is Head of Oil & Gas for the Middle East and Counsel in the Energy, Transport and Infrastructure practice in Dentons’ Abu Dhabi office. He is a senior oil and gas lawyer with over 25 years’ experience across the oil and gas value chain globally, particularly in the North Sea, Africa and the Middle East having worked both as in-house counsel as well as in private practice for international law firms in London, Aberdeen and Cape Town.

Kenny acts for both the private sector, governments and NOCs in upstream, midstream and downstream projects with a particular focus on gas developments and associated domestic utilization and LNG and petroleum import/export projects.

  • North Sea: the acquisition and disposal of interests in the UK for many clients including leading the corporate and asset disposals of a large US independent’s entire North Sea interest portfolio and also key acquisition and disposals for independents in high value North and Sub Saharan Africa transactions.
  • North Sea: Extensive experience, leading many production developments, petroleum pipeline and shared infrastructure developments in the North Sea over the last decade.
  • International and South African oil and gas company: Advising in relation to its farm-in to Blocks 11b/12b offshore South Africa.
  • Government in South Africa: Advising in relation to its LNG import to power IPP procurement program, being core advisor on the overall tendering program and contractual structure of the bundled LNG import to IPP project to be bid on.
  • Central and provincial government in South Africa: Providing legal support on multiple feasibility studies for gas import and utilization in the Southern African region.
  • International mega infrastructure development company: Advising the client and its joint venture partners on the development and financing of a refined products import, storage and pipeline project for delivery of liquid fuels into Ethiopia via Djibouti.
  • National Oil Company (NOC): Advising on the structuring and project financing of a greenfield refinery project in Africa including domestic utilization structures.
  • Australian/South African oil & gas company: Advising the upstream developers of a Gas Field offshore of South Africa on the commercialization of the field.
  • FSRU-based LNG to power project in Southern Africa: Advising the sponsors in the early stages of the project.
  • NIOC (for and on behalf of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF): Advising on the development of a contractual framework for the implementation of LNG/gas projects covering the whole LNG/gas chain from production to sales including gas sales for gas fired power projects.
  • The Joint Executive Office of the Guangdong LNG Import Project: Advising on the negotiation and drafting of six fully-termed LNG sale and purchase agreements (one FOB and one DES with each of the potential suppliers).
