Position

Richard is a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution team based in Dubai.

He specialises in international arbitration and commercial dispute resolution, across multiple sectors. He has a particular focus on complex disputes involving financial institutions, civil fraud, joint ventures, corporate matters, international trade/commodities and insurance.

Richard has conducted litigation in the High Court of Justice, Court of Justice of the European Union, DIFC Courts and various international arbitrations (including ICC, LCIA, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC, HKIAC, and LMAA). He has practiced in the United Arab Emirates since 2015.

Richard's cases often have an international element and he regularly advises on matters of jurisdiction, conflicts of law and the enforcement of court judgments and arbitral awards. He has also obtained urgent interim relief in both the High Court and DIFC Court. Richard has also acted successfully with local counsel in two cases before the Joint Judicial Committee in Dubai concerning the jurisdiction of the DIFC Courts.

After initially practicing as a barrister in London, Richard cross-qualified as a solicitor in 2013 retaining higher rights of audience in England & Wales. He has higher rights of audience in the DIFC Court (Part II) and is a registered practitioner in the ADGM Courts. Richard also appears as an advocate in arbitration proceedings, and is a Member of CIArb. Richard has a keen interest and specialism in cases involving fine art and related disputes, including specie insurance.

He has been recognised as a "Rising Star" for Arbitration and International Litigation in the Legal 500: "Richard Clarke is a senior associate who shows great promise as a very able administrator of any major piece of litigation. He has good legal judgment."
