The firm

D Young & Co was established in 1891 when David Young opened the first office. Although the IP landscape has since changed beyond recognition, one thing remains the same: the firm’s focus on providing the highest quality IP service possible.

In 2011 the firm became the first UK legal disciplinary practice (LDP) to bring IP solicitors together with patent and trade mark attorneys to create one IP centre of excellence.

In 2016 – its 125th year in business – the firm opened its Munich office and has grown its European team to almost 200 people.

Throughout the past 125 years, the firm has always been bold, proactive and forward-looking, supporting innovative organisations of every shape and size, located around the world. It has grown to offer a cost-effective, streamlined IP service to its clients, under one roof, focusing on patents, trade marks and designs, IP strategy, licensing and litigation.

Areas of practice

As a legal disciplinary practice (LDP), D Young & Co brings together the specialist IP services of patent and trade mark attorneys, solicitors and Rechtsanwälte within a single IP firm. This establishes it as an IP centre of excellence and raises the bar for the quality and depth of its IP and related advice. As a ‘one-stop shop’ for all IP and related issues, the firm can pass on significant cost savings to clients whatever their budget.

Key areas of work

Patents: D Young & Co has one of the most respected and largest patent teams in Europe, providing a full range of patent services including patent drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications, infringement (freedom to operate) validity opinions on third party IP, oppositions and appeals, due diligence work, litigation in the UK, Germany and co-ordinated internationally, portfolio audit and strategic advice, searches and renewals and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs).

Trade marks and designs: the trade mark team is ranked top tier year on year for trade mark services. Clients range from sole traders to global brand leaders in a broad range of industries. The team’s work includes clearance searches, global filing and brand strategies, portfolio audits, oppositions, invalidation and cancellation actions, enforcement, infringement advice, due diligence, anti-counterfeiting, litigation in the UK and EU courts, arbitration and mediation.
