Position

Doug’s main areas of expertise are in computer technology fields (including hardware and software), consumer electronics, camera, display and VR technologies and mobile telephony. Doug has had experience both in private practice and industry drafting and obtaining patent applications worldwide.

His private practice clients have included major consumer electronics companies, as well as research groups and start-ups. Doug also has a keen interest in wearables, 3D printing and IoT applications.

Career

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Doug was a research engineer for the Defence Research Agency (now QinetiQ) between 1992 and 1995, and after completing his PhD became a research engineer for Motorola Labs between 1999 and 2002, where his work on distributed speech recognition was incorporated into the 3G standard.

Doug has written ‘The Study Guide to the Patents Acts’, annual editions published by CIPA. Current edition available from the CIPA website.

Certificate in Intellectual Property Law (Queen Mary College, University of London). Chartered patent attorney 2007. European patent attorney 2008.
