Career
Paul has experience across the full range of patent matters. Since joining Elkington + Fife in 2013, he has been responsible for prosecuting applications before the EPO and coordinating with international agents. He has also drafted numerous patent applications directed towards the protection of new chemical entities and process chemistry methodologies. Paul also has extensive experience providing freedom-to-operate and infringement and validity opinions, and has co-ordinated Europe-wide clearance opinions ahead of major product launches. More recently, he has become involved in EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, working with multi-national clients to both oppose and defend high-value patents.
Paul obtained a first class MChem degree in Chemistry from the University of Leeds in 2008, and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Imperial College London in 2012. He completed post-doctoral studies at the same institution in 2013, where his research was directed towards biomimetic synthesis.
During his PhD, Paul’s research was focussed upon the synthesis of bioactive anti-cancer agents and the total synthesis of natural products. Paul also has industrial experience in the USA, receiving training in computer assisted drug design and the synthesis and development of bioactive antibody-drug conjugates.
