Career
Jens is passionate about helping biotechnology companies build strong patent portfolios. He enjoys the intellectual challenge of accompanying research, regulatory and commercial teams in their endeavour to turn a scientific discovery into a medicine that improves patients’ lives. He frequently assists clients in obtaining patent protection for clinical development candidates, new medical uses and manufacturing processes. His experience stretches from the initial invention harvesting and patent drafting to the defence of patents in both EPO opposition proceedings and multi-jurisdictional patent litigation. He regularly advises companies that develop treatments for rare diseases and is well-acquainted with the interface between patent and EU regulatory law, in particular in the context of supplementary protection certificates (SPCs), paediatric rewards and orphan market exclusivity.
Jens entered the patent profession in 2007 and trained as a patent attorney in both the US and Germany before qualifying as a European and chartered UK patent attorney at a leading intellectual property firm in London. Before becoming a patent professional, Jens studied host-pathogen interactions, first as a doctoral student at Stony Brook University on Long Island and then as a postdoctoral researcher at NYU Medical Center in New York City. He was awarded his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology by Stony Brook University in 2005. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed scientific articles on bacterial genes required for the survival of Yersinia pestis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in macrophages.
Jens was born and raised at the shores of Lake Constance and is a native German speaker.
