Career
Emily is a European patent expert, providing quality complex legal advice to domestic and international tech companies. Emily specialises in patent strategy and prosecution, helping her clients to obtain IP protection tailored to their needs.
As a VP of the San Francisco liaison office for two years, Emily has unparalleled knowledge of navigating the European patent system for US applicants. Emily understands the challenges faced by in-house counsel when managing an international portfolio. Using her knowledge of the intricate differences between the US and European systems, she is able to find the best path to obtaining international protection aligned with a US strategy. In her role in San Francisco, Emily makes dealing with European counsel straightforward and efficient for US counsel.
With a master’s in physics from Oxford University, Emily’s technical experience is wide-ranging, including telecoms, software, optics, aerospace and medical devices. A large portion of Emily’s portfolio is medical devices, and Emily is an industry expert on radiofrequency engineering for medical applications.
Emily has been widely recognised for her achievements, particularly as a woman in a field dominated by men. Emily has been recognised in World IP Review ‘Influential Women in IP’ 2021, as an MIP Rising Star 2019 and 2020, in Women in Law awards 2021 for ‘outstanding legal expertise and contribution within the practice area of Patents’, and by World IP Forum as a ‘Powerful Women in IP’ 2021.
Emily prides herself on technical accuracy and her ability to leverage her knowledge of the patent system to the advantage of her clients. Emily brings a human side to technical legal advice, and her clients enjoy working with Emily for her personable skills. Emily has completed a number of in-house secondments for a multinational company, with responsibilities from invention capture to portfolio management. This experience makes Emily uniquely positioned to understand the needs of in-house counsel and commercial considerations for international portfolios.
Emily is passionate about making a positive difference to those around her, taking proactive action in the workplace and the profession as a whole. Emily has a keen interest in mental health, having co-founded a mental health awareness campaign whilst at university. As a leading voice on the matter in the profession, Emily speaks a number of times as year to new students on mental health in IP and has written a number of articles on the topic. Emily has written a mental health policy for the IP profession. Combining her passions for innovation and gender equality, Emily has been researching and writing on the gender gap in innovation, particularly looking at gender diversity in worldwide patenting. Emily is learning how companies provide a culture in which promotes innovation from women and minorities. She has written numerous articles on the topic.
