Position

Chris Hamer is one of the world’s leading chemistry attorneys and widely considered as an expert in the field of ionic liquids and related technologies, although his expertise extends to numerous chemistry related technology areas, in particular food chemistry, natural food supplements, biochemicals, polymers, materials sciences, absorbent articles, catalytic processes and petrochemical technologies.

Career

Chris has many years’ experience of drafting, prosecution, infringement and validity, commercialisation of university IP, and global IP strategy advice, including freedom-to-operate, licensing advice, entitlement disputes and competitor monitoring. He is also immensely experienced in multi-party Opposition and Appeal procedures before the European Patent Office and represents companies such as BP, Petroliam Nasional Berhad, AarhusKarlshamn, Queen’s University Belfast, QUILL, Indena and Ineos. He is also experienced in UK High Court proceedings having worked on matters including QinetiQ v GEODynamics, Tech 21 v Design Blue Limited and DynaEnergetics GmbH v GEODynamics.

Chris is highly regarded for his pragmatic commercial expertise, which has helped his clients to grow from small SMEs to valuations of in excess of £300 million.  He is also actively involved in advising on international strategy for Petronas’s highly acclaimed mercury removal processes. As a result of his expertise he is a non-executive member of a number of company boards.

Chris is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Licensing Executives Society and is often invited to lecture at universities and conferences.

Education

Chris has an Honours Degree in Chemistry from Bristol University. Before joining Mathys & Squire in 2004, he spent two years working for a German firm of patent attorneys in Munich.
