Advisory work in employment law (individual and collective) and public employment law; works with colleagues on litigation in these areas; mediation; employment law and industrial relations arbitration and conciliation; labour law expert for the International Labour Organisation and an expert adviser to the European Commission; experienced lecturer to legal practitioner, management and trade union audiences in the UK and overseas.

Qualified 1997; Inner Temple; honorary professor, University College London September 2012 to date; honorary professor, Warwick Business School 2007-2012; professor of law, Brunel University 1993-2003; holder of other academic posts 1977-93; deputy chair, Central Arbitration Committee 2000 to date; chair, Review Body for Nursing and other Health Professions (now the NHS Pay Review Body) 2005 to March 2011; deputy chair, Police Negotiating Board and Police Advisory Board for England and Wales 2005 to date; member of ACAS Panel of Arbitrators 2007 to date. Publications of note include: ‘Labour Law’ with S Deakin (Hart Publishing, 8th edition, 2012); ‘Collective Labour Law’ with T Archer (Hart Publishing 2000); ‘The State as Employer: Labour Law in the Public Services’, with S Fredman (Mansell 1989); ‘Strikes in Essential Services’ (Mansell 1986); numerous articles in the ‘Industrial Law Journal’, ‘Public Law’ and other leading journals.
