Career

Elin Hughes joined Chambers following the successful completion of her pupillage in October 2019. She accepts instructions across all of Chambers’ practice areas, including public law proceedings, private law children matters, and financial remedy cases. Elin has built a dynamic and thriving practice, regularly acting in complex cases and appearing at all levels of the family courts, up to and including the High Court. She is recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500 directory for the second consecutive year.

Before commencing pupillage, Elin worked as a research assistant at the Law Commission of England and Wales, followed by a role as a family paralegal at a top-ranked firm in both The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. During this time, she gained invaluable experience in complex financial remedies and child arrangements cases, including assisting on a case before the Supreme Court.

Practice overview

Private Children Law 

Elin is instructed in a wide range of private children disputes, including applications for Child Arrangements Orders, Prohibited Steps Orders, and Specific Issue Orders. She has significant experience representing parents in contact disputes involving allegations of domestic abuse, including domestic violence and coercive or controlling behavior. Elin has also been involved in numerous Fact-Finding Hearings.

Public Children Law 

Elin regularly represents local authorities, parents, and guardians in care proceedings. Her expertise includes complex care work, having served as junior counsel in cases involving allegations of non-accidental injury, sexual abuse, serious physical chastisement, and forced marriage. Elin has experience working with vulnerable clients, including parents with learning difficulties. She has also contributed to the training of expert witnesses at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Finance Proceedings 

Elin acts in matters related to matrimonial finance and applications under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989. Her prior experience as a paralegal at Stewarts equipped her with substantial knowledge in handling complex financial matters.
