Career

Emily Beer was a joint winner of “family law case of the Year 2022” for Re HW 2022 UKSC 17 in which she successfully appeared pro bono as first junior for the second respondent, whose arguments were accepted by the Supreme Court.

Emily entered her 20th year of practice in 2024. Her practice covers all areas of family law. With extensive experience in care proceedings, private law disputes (including international relocation of children), parental alienation and forced marriages. Emily is frequently instructed to represent parents accused of serious physical or sexual abuse in both private and public law cases.  A significant number of her cases have involved complex medical evidence and/or parallel criminal proceedings.  In finance she has represented clients in all types of financial remedy matters including divorce, and Schedule 1 Children Act applications.

She stands out as a highly experienced and skilled barrister with well-attuned judgment which she brings to every case. Emily is able to settle client’s nerves, give them clear lucid explanations of complex points and obtain exceptional results for them. Emily combines her keen intellect with emotional intelligence to build a realistic case which can then be pushed forward with confidence and vigour.

Emily is able to connect with clients of all backgrounds and intelligences and meet them at their own level. Her empathetic skills are frequently called upon in representing young and vulnerable parents, including those who are still themselves children. Emily also regularly represents children through their Guardians in public law and 16.4 private law Guardian cases.

Emily has shown in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court her commitment to her clients and ability to make compelling and persuasive submissions in the most complex and unpromising of cases. Emily was singled out for compliment by the Court of Appeal in both her most recent Court of Appeal cases. With two different tribunals commenting on her “well-presented submissions in reply” and finding  “the submissions of Ms Beer in particular, very persuasive.”

Emily is joint head of Pupillage at 3|DJB and loves identifying and supporting the next generation of 3|DJB advocates. Outside work she has two children and some very pampered guinea-pigs.
