Position

Michael practises across a wide range of commercial law, with a particular interest in the areas of banking and finance, energy, shareholders, and disputes with a technical or scientific aspect. He undertakes advisory and litigation work, both in the courts (principally the High Court and the Court of Appeal) and in arbitration. He also sits as an arbitrator. Notable recent cases include (1) Thurcroft Power Ltd v. Volta Energy Group Ltd [2022] EWHC 338 (Comm) (concerning the proper interpretation of an option agreement relating to a battery storage project); (2) the BlueCrest litigation, most recently Revenue and Customs Commissioners v. BlueCrest Capital Management LP [2022] UKUT 200 (TCC) and BCM Cayman LP v. Revenue and Customs Commissioners [2022] UKUT 198 (TCC); [2022] STI 1188 (concerning the taxation of BlueCrest’s alternative asset management business); and (3) CFH Clearing Ltd v. Merrill Lynch International [2020] EWCA Civ 1064 (concerning a claim for losses arising from trades entered into in the wake of the de-pegging of the Swiss Franc from the Euro).
