Position

Varsha specialises in mental capacity, mental health, inquests, and community care law. She is a member of the Attorney General’s London C Panel of Junior Counsel.

Career

Varsha has a very busy Court of Protection practice and is instructed in complex health and welfare matters by the Official Solicitor, RPRs and lay litigation friends, family members, local authorities, health bodies, and care providers. She has particular expertise in cases concerning protected parties who are at risk of offending and come to the attention of the police and/or criminal justice system; the deprivation of liberty of young persons, where there is use of restraint and/or sedation; and medical disputes such as the withholding of life-sustaining treatment and Covid-19 vaccination.

Before coming to the Bar, Varsha worked in bioethics policy at the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. There she researched and prepared major reports on the ethical issues regarding dementia, neurotechnologies that intervene in the brain, and biofuels. She also prepared papers on ethical issues such as the ethics of paediatric clinical trials and global health inequalities. Varsha remains very interested in cases that raise medical ethical issues.
