Position

William Dean is a barrister and mediator whose practice combines court advocacy and advisory work. His common law background gives him experience of a wide range of courts and tribunals at both first instance and appellate level.

William advises and represents individuals, companies, local authorities, police forces, government agencies and other clients before and during proceedings. He advises on paper and in conference (including by telephone and video) on merits, evidence, quantum and legal issues. William also delivers lectures and seminars in matters related to his areas of practice.

Career

Civil: William accepts instructions to advise on merits, evidence and quantum in a range of areas of the civil law. In addition to personal injury work, including clinical negligence claims, he advises on contractual and commercial matters and issues relating to costs. He frequently appears in court in trials, applications and other hearings. He acts under conditional fee agreements where appropriate.

Personal injury: William has a varied practice in personal injury claims. He regularly represents clients in the County Court and has undertaken work in the Companies Court and the Magistrates’ Court. He is instructed on small claims and fast track trials as well as various interim and disposal hearings and applications. He also advises on paper as to the prospects of success and on damages in a range of claims, including those brought on behalf of children. He has advised in clinical negligence claims of varying complexity.

William also undertakes work before the First-tier Tribunal (Criminal Injuries Compensation) and has appeared in the Coroner’s Court. William is a contributor  to the Butterworths Personal Injury Litigation Service (Road Traffic Accidents chapter) and The Civil Court Practice (‘the Green Book’, Personal Injury and Death chapter).

Commercial and property disputes: William advises on commercial cases involving loans, contracts and personal interests. He also acts in business and property disputes. His experience of post-judgment proceedings extends to enforcement and costs applications, including for charging orders. William often appears in court on such matters. He appears in applications under the Housing Act and matters involving tenancies and disrepair claims. Additionally, he has experience of applications for acquisition orders and vesting orders in relation to rented property.
