Position

Matthew is a leading practitioner at the commercial Bar. He took silk in 2021. He is a hugely experienced advocate who is frequently noted for his robust submissions and skilful cross-examination.  He appears in a wide range of complex and high-value disputes, in the UK and internationally, and has been called to the Bar in the BVI and the Cayman Islands.  Matthew’s expertise ranges across the spectrum of commercial law, but he is particularly noted for his excellence in commercial litigation and international arbitration and in disputes involving banking and financial services, civil fraud, IT & telecoms, energy and professional negligence.

Career

Matthew has appeared in some of the largest pieces of commercial litigation in recent years including Privatbank v Kolomoisky [2018] EWHC 3308 (Ch) ($2bn freezing injunction), Tatneft v Bogolyubov [2018] 4 WLR 14 ($200m fraud claim), the RBS Rights Issue litigation (2017) and CBE v Conticorp [2016] 1 BCLC 26 ($200m fraud claim). In addition to this, he frequently acts as sole or lead advocate, appearing at trial in Rashid v OCIMF [2019] EWHC 2239 (QB), Big Field v Solar [2018] EWHC 2866 (Comm) and Aras v National Bank of Greece [2018] EWHC 1389 (Comm) and in the Court of Appeal in Argyle v Par-la-Ville [2018] EWCA Civ 1762, Lawlor v Sandvik [2013] 2 Lloyd’s Rep 98 and Morin v Bonhams & Brooks [2004] 1 Lloyd's Rep 702. He is also regularly instructed in international arbitrations, recently securing an LCIA award for US$30m and the dismissal of a US$130m counterclaim.
