Position

Hugh is a highly experienced and well regarded specialist advocate who advises on all aspects of family law including the financial aspects of divorce, and both private and public law children matters. His work includes cases with an international aspect, and includes Schedule 1 hearings as well as advising on Pre and Post Nuptial agreements.

Hugh spoke at the International Bar Association Conference in Madrid on the subject of the impact of the Brussels II regulation upon the resolution of international jurisdictional disputes in divorce proceedings.

Hugh is considered to be a leading Junior at the Family Bar having practiced in the area for over 30 years. His clear, empathetic and sensible advise endears him to clients and Judges alike.

He maintains a discrete practice in the areas of contract and employment law and can advise both companies and individuals on contractual matters. In employment law his experience covers a wide range of issues including unfair dismissal and discrimination cases.

Family Finance

Hugh is regularly instructed in financial cases covering a broad spectrum of clients, from modest asset matters to those which are considered to be high-net-worth including business entities and trusts.

Hugh’s cases are often heard by District Judges in the Family Court but also has extensive experience in appearing in matters listed at the High Court as well as the Court of Appeal.

Private Law Children

Hugh is regularly instructed on behalf of parents, grandparents and children in relation to complicated private law disputes. He has particular experience in cases dealing with residence and contact issues as well as cases involving parental alienation.

He maintains a practice in public law proceedings and his cases cover a wide range of factual bases including the most serious allegations of physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

Hugh��s Court of Appeal practice has covered issues as diverse as the application of section 91(14) of the Children Act 1989, to the factual basis upon which a finding of sexual abuse may be made against a child. Hugh recently appeared in J (Children: Reopening Findings of Fact) [2023] EWCA Civ 465.
