Position
Hammad Baig is a barrister specialising in commercial litigation, insolvency, shipping law, international trade law, domestic and cross-border VAT, and customs & excise law. Recognized as an expert by Tolley (Tax Intelligence by LexisNexis), Hammad has extensive experience in analysing complex provisions in disputes with His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
Hammad brings firsthand litigation experience to every case. He frequently appears in Courts and Tribunals, particularly before the Tax Tribunals, and accepts instructions in relation to above areas of law.
Career
Hammad was called in 2010. Prior to coming to law Hammad founded a company operating in the circular industry, exporting bulk quantities of electronics to China. He was also involved in the manufacturing and wholesale distribution of previous stone and previous metal jewellery.
Hammad has extensive shipping and commercial law experience, he can assist with wide range of commercial and shipping issues including but not limited to: sale of goods disputes, delays, mis-delivery, damage to cargo, discharge of cargo against Letters of Indemnity, detention and arrest, and exclusions of liability.
He is well-versed in analysing complex provisions in disputes with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, with particular expertise in:
Hammad is a member of several professional bodies, including:
Customs Practitioners Group Revenue Bar Association VAT Practitioners Group Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade Preference, trade barriers, classification, origin, customs valuation, and other technical issues. VAT rules for exempt and zero-rated supplies, place of supply of services and goods, place of establishment, cross-border movement of goods in the EU and third countries, and recovery of VAT incurred in the EU. Customs reliefs and planning to help importers optimize resources and maximize competitive trade advantages.Post Brexit, Hammad updated the full Customs Duties division of De Voil Indirect Tax Service. He is also a contributor to the Management of Customs and Excise sections of the Finance Act Handbook 2023.
He is a part of the Membership Committee of the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade. He also sits on the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Scrutiny Panels.
