Guy Mathieson practices exclusively in criminal law.

He has experience across all areas of general crime. He has particular expertise in case of rape, serious sexual offences and historic sexual abuse allegations, both those that involve adults and especially those that involve child witnesses. He has appeared in many cases involving vulnerable witnesses, intermediaries and section 28 protocols.

He prosecutes for a wide range of CPS branches, throughout the North West. He is a category three Prosecutor for general crime and is appointed to the specialist Rape Prosecution panel.

He has been instructed regularly in serious criminal matters and high-profile cases, including prosecuting with Leading Counsel a man accused of the murder of his baby son, prosecuting against Leading Counsel a former police superintendent for perverting the course of justice, prosecuting three serving prisoners and their associates for bringing drugs into HMP Preston, prosecuting two PCSOs for a campaign of misconduct and perverting the course of justice.

He is instructed by Defence Solicitors throughout the North West and further afield, having dealt with serious cases in Derby, Taunton and Canterbury in the recent past.

He has been instructed to defend in the full range of crimes, including defending sexual allegations, such as sexual abuse of young boys at a school (section 28 protocol case), historic abuse of a granddaughter, rape of a young woman, who had extensive learning difficulties and the assistance of an intermediary, by a Kurdish man, who needed the assistance of an interpreter.

He has defended in cases of serious crime and high-profile cases including one involving seven defendants accused of trafficking of a vulnerable young woman for a sham marriage, an internet grooming case in which main evidence was from a vigilante group setting up false social media accounts, a murder with Leading Counsel where case is based on circumstantial evidence 190 witnesses, 800+ statements and 4500+ exhibits.

As well as dealing with substantive criminal offences he has also gained considerable experience in dealing with matters ancillary and associated to criminal offences, such as Anti-Social Behaviour Orders, Sexual Offence Prevention Orders and the full range of proceedings connected with the Proceeds of Crime Act.He was appointed as a Recorder, sitting on crime, in August 2008. He was further authorised to try rape and serious sexual cases in August 2012, an acknowledgement of his experience and skill in dealing with such cases.

He has been a pupil supervisor on two occasions.

He acts as an advisor to Bolton School Boys/Girls Divisions for the Independent School Mock Trial Competition.

He has also presented lectures about the bar and the criminal justice system to their six form law students.

He has given talks on the role of a barrister to Witness Service volunteers and to new police officers.

Given his experience on sexual offences, vulnerable witnesses and section 28 protocols, he is an instructor on this topic for Northern Circuit barristers and HCAs.
