A day in the life of... Jack Kahn, Apprentice
Departments to date: Human resources (ED&I); Information technology (current)
University: University of Leeds; The University of Law
Degree: LLB
9.15am: I usually arrive around this time so I can settle in before the day begins. There are over 30 people in the IT department, which makes it a fantastic team to be part of as there are always familiar faces in the office. I start my day by reviewing my calendar, flagged emails and to-do list and then plan my time accordingly.
9.30am: In my current seat, I work with multiple teams which provides me with a wide range of interesting opportunities. I primarily support the IT projects team and the IT training team, providing them with administrative support, undertaking research projects and managing internal communications. This morning, I began by using our learning management system to generate a monthly report on the IT training teams statistics. I summarise this information, extracting key themes and quotes and then circulate this to the relevant people in the department.
11.30am: I spent much of my time in my previous seat (ED&I) supporting the establishment of the firm’s new ED&I networks and committee, along with organising ED&I events. Despite moving to a new department, I still take part in ED&I initiatives through membership of Farrer REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Culture) Employee Impact Group. Recently, I have worked with colleagues to plan a Mela event in recognition of South Asian Heritage month. I arrive at the event early to assist with the final preparations and then had an opportunity myself to attend the bazaar and enjoy the fusion of traditional South Asian food, music and culture.
2.00pm: I have a meeting with one of our new interns. This was an induction meeting to discuss the responsibilities they will have in their new role.
3.00pm: Once a week, I have a meeting to catch up with my supervisor in the IT project management team. I update them with the progress I have made on the assignments I have been working on for each initiative. I particularly enjoy my work in this team as it gives me the opportunity to work with colleagues across the firm. One highlight has been working with the property department to acquire an innovative and niche piece of AI-based legal technology.
5.30pm: My supervisor and I take the train to Regent’s Park to play for the Farrers Touch Rugby team. It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to meet people from across the firm in a fun and relaxed environment. There are plenty of different sports fixtures taking place throughout the year.
