GC Magazine was excited to host the second in its cutting-edge events series, Trailblazers, in Zurich on 8 June 2016. Once again, we were working with Tom Sager, the innovative former general counsel of DuPont.
In a highly informative session, Sager presented on the drivers and key components of the DuPont Legal model as well as lessons learned from this creative legal process management model, which was one of the first to think about the delivery of in-house legal services in a more business-like format. The presentation was interspersed by questions and conversation between Sager and GC Magazine’s editor-In-chief, Catherine McGregor.
One of the most interesting aspects was how many of the key components of the model are still very innovative today, such as cross-law firm collaboration, disaggregation and the use of technology.
The discussion between Tom and Catherine was followed by a dynamic panel discussion, with Swiss-based general counsel commenting on themes raised. Our panelists were Christophe Marclay, head of legal group operations, Zurich Insurance; Daniel Morales, general counsel, UBS Switzerland; and Johann Philippi, general counsel, SAB Miller Global Procurement.
The discussion was both provocative and wide-ranging, covering issues such as how to consider ‘the why’ as well as ‘the what’ of the role of in-house lawyers; what in-house legal departments and outside counsel of the future might need to look like; and where the legal landscape might be in 2038.
The discussion was followed by a drinks and networking session.
