How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

In times of instability, managing legal issues requires a flexible and proactive approach. For our fashion and retail business, which is inherently impacted by changing trends and economic fluctuations, a robust legal strategy is essential for both immediate risk management and long-term stability.

My approach emphasises agility, proactive risk assessment, and alignment with broader business objectives. We prioritise being adaptable, with clear processes in place to handle unexpected legal challenges effectively. Ensuring that our legal responses are in sync with our business strategies helps us manage contracts efficiently, communicate effectively, and adhere to regulations.

Close collaboration with senior management at both local and headquarters levels, as well as working closely with internal project leaders, are essential. By understanding our strategic goals and incorporating them into our legal planning, we ensure that our legal efforts support the overall business objectives. This integration strengthens our resilience, allowing us to navigate crises more effectively and maintain stability.

We also emphasise a culture of proactive risk management. This includes sharing cases, providing training on potential legal risks, and fostering a mindset focused on legal compliance and risk reduction. By embedding these practices into our daily operations, we enhance our ability to handle crises and remain stable during turbulent times.

In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in Hong Kong currently (these can be legal, political, economy or business-based)?

Hong Kong is currently undergoing several significant trends that impact its legal, political, economic, and business environments. The regulatory landscape is evolving, with a heightened emphasis on data privacy and cybersecurity. Revisions to the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) are aligning Hong Kong more closely with global standards such as the GDPR. This reflects a broader trend towards greater transparency and accountability, with increased scrutiny in areas such as anti-corruption and corporate governance.

Politically, the National Security Law introduced in 2020 has led to substantial changes in local governance and international relations. This law has introduced new uncertainties that impact how businesses operate and manage risks in both local and global contexts.

Economically, Hong Kong is shifting towards innovation and technology. Government initiatives are positioning the city as a fintech and technology hub, supported by significant investments in infrastructure and incentives for startups. At the same time, global economic conditions, including trade tensions and the impact of COVID-19, continue to shape market dynamics and influence business strategies.

In the business sector, there is an increasing emphasis on sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Pressure from consumers, investors, and regulators is driving companies to adopt sustainable practices and adhere to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. This trend is reshaping supply chain management, corporate reporting, and overall business strategies.

Additionally, Hong Kong’s role as a gateway to China adds complexity to managing cross-border legal and compliance issues. Companies must navigate diverse regulatory frameworks and ensure adherence to both local laws and international standards to operate effectively in the Asia Pacific region.

In conclusion, Hong Kong’s landscape features dynamic legal reforms, political shifts, economic transformation driven by technology, increased focus on sustainability, and the challenges of managing cross-border commerce. Staying agile and informed is essential for businesses to navigate and thrive in this complex environment.
