What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

The mobile telecommunications market in Mexico is unique, characterised by a dominant player holding nearly 70% of the market share. Recently, the government has begun to compete, and leveraging Altan’s current cost structure, BAIT, which is Walmart’s mobile virtual network operator, has become highly active in the prepaid segment.

In this context, AT&T acts as the challenger in Mexico’s mobile telecommunications market, facing substantial obstacles while also encountering various opportunities. The company must address a range of issues, including acquiring the necessary resources to deliver our services, establishing efficient distribution channels to reach our customers, and navigating the intricate regulatory and antitrust frameworks that govern the telecommunications industry.

Despite this, there is considerable scope for creativity and strategic thinking. The legal team plays a vital role in supporting operations by collaborating on the development of disruptive offers and schemes. We provide business-oriented legal advice that enhances our initiatives and adds value for both the company and our clients. Moreover, we actively participate in the decision-making process to ensure that legal considerations are integrated into our strategic planning.

As a legal team, we are privileged to be at the forefront of addressing these hurdles and seising opportunities, contributing to the overall success of AT&T in Mexico’s competitive mobile telecommunications market.

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

We initiated regular calls with the business units to gain a deeper understanding of their goals, operations, and needs. This effort allowed us to engage in more focused discussions aimed at developing additional skills, such as financial acumen, comprehension of key metrics for investors, and emotional intelligence, among others.

What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

One cause that I am particularly passionate about is gender equality. There remain numerous opportunities for improvement in STEM fields and the legal profession regarding gender representation. Currently, I am mentoring two women, offering them guidance and support as they navigate their professional careers.
