In 2014 a significant reform was made to the telecommunications law in Mexico. The resulting opening of the market generated new competition and new services, encouraging Eutelsat Americas to reinvent its strategies and apply new models to its future business. In that regard, the legal team at Eutelsat, in conjunction with the other areas of the company, has evolved to be more innovative and to change old schemes and documents to keep up with the requirements of the new customer and industry landscape. Recently the team has been integral to the contracts and legal follow up of launching two new satellites. Iris Sánchez, corporate director, is an expert on satellite matters, negotiating the core agreement for the launch. She has been recognised for her wide knowledge of the operations of the company and is regarded as a valuable asset for the business. Furthermore, the team has also been tasked with the constitution of two new companies in the American continent, the diverse capital increases and decreases of two companies from Eutelsat Americas, and the reinforcement of company policies in antitrust, compliance and non-compete matters. Made up of seven lawyers, one intern and two administrative staff, the team is led by general counsel Mariana Páez Robles Martínez who has overseen the continuous development of the team. ‘The legal team of Eutelsat Americas is a strong presence within the corporation. Another individual who stands out is Veronica Gutierrez, legal director, who also displays a vast experience in the satellite industry and, ‘is very business-oriented, prompt in responding to her clients’ inquiries and is a source of innovative solutions that benefit the operation of the company. As a leader she is very hands on with her team and has a close relationship with them’.
