It operates Coca-Cola FEMSA, the largest independent Coca-Cola bottling group in the world, OXXO, the largest convenience store chain in Mexico, and is the second-largest shareholder in international brewery company Heineken. Comprised of lawyers with impeccable commercial acumen and an ability to effectively manage legal spend, FEMSA’s strong legal team has gained a reputation for being able to effortlessly manage legal and compliance risks. Led by Carlos Eduardo Aldrete Ancira – a lawyer with extensive experience in international business and financial transactions, debt issuances and corporate restructurings and substantial expertise in securities and private M&A, acquired over the course of the last 20 years in the role – the team provide strategic leadership and direction for all legal matters concerning the day-to-day operations of FEMSA’s various business units. The legal unit has been widely praised for its work on various acquisitions conducted by FEMSA across Latin America, contributing to the group’s efforts to diversify its retail chain and considerably extended its footprint in small-format retail chains in Mexico, Chile and Colombia. In particular, Aldrete’s team has impressed with its swift execution of an acquisition of the Chilean convenience store operator Big John in 2016. Given its renowned status and solid growth prospects, the acquisition of Big John is likely to enhance FEMSA’s presence in Chile.
