Career Biography

Mr. Saugata Chakravarty is the chief legal officer of Grasim Industries. With a team of 38 lawyers, he is responsible for providing legal advisory services and ensuring effective management of legal and contractual risks for Grasim. He advises management on strategic issues, changes in law and its impact on business, for anticipating and analysing new enactments, changes/proposed changes in the laws and providing proactive views and insights. He is a permanent invitee to Board and Management Committee meetings.

Saugata started his career as an independent Lawyer in a Law firm. Prior to joining Grasim, he was associated with Siemens for over 15 years including at Siemens Energy Limited, United Kingdom as lead lawyer for its power and gas global business, and with Siemens Limited, India as general counsel (South Asia). He headed a team of around 36 people at Siemens Ltd, a public listed company in India and was a part of the Executive Management team of Siemens. He was serving on the board as director of some of the Siemens group entities. Under his leadership, Siemens India legal department won several accolades and prestigious awards.

Saugata is LL.B. from Calcutta University and LL.M. in Commercial Law from Cardiff University, Wales, U.K. His experience as a Corporate Transactional Lawyer spans for more than 24 years of experience in legal and corporate affairs, governance, risk and compliance. He has pioneered governance role while catering to the sustainable growth of publicly listed companies in India, and whilst working in U.K and Germany being responsible for global business. He is extremely resourceful in managing large in-house teams for domestic and international business, overseeing day-to-day legal matters including policy advocacy. In 2016, Saugata was chosen as the general counsel of the year by IDEX. He is also named in the top 100 of GC Powerlist: India of 2016, 2017, and recently in 2022 from the Legal 500.
