What are the most significant cases or transactions that you have been involved in over the past year?

Over the past years, I have been working work as legal counsel in the hospitality industry. This is the opportunity for me to be involved in various legal and compliance matters of the industry including gaming (hotel and casino operation), finance and banking (loans, finance restructuring…), resort real estate development (development of hotel apartments, resort villas and hospitality facilities for lease and sale), AML (oversight the AML compliance matter for the casino operation). For confidentiality requirement, I regret that I cannot mention any specific cases and transactions involved.

How do you motivate and manage the other members of your legal team well?

I focus more on the training for the young members of the team, especially the entry level positions. I discuss with them, together we outline a career path and the related requirements for them to achieve. I sometimes had a private discussion with one of them, shared things I have done, gave them some advice to overcome a specific issue they were facing when handling the assigned tasks.

We from time to time had a team meeting for a team member to share a case they are handling or have successfully handled, as a case study for the team. For that I encourage my team members for a long-life learning approach.

As Vietnamese lawyers, I also encourage the team to improve everyday their legal English, which is, for me, one of the key successes in an international working environment like our company.

Are the effects of AI on the legal world overplayed, or underplayed?

I think that the AI will rather bring positive effects to the legal industry. I do not think that in the future, the AI may replace the lawyer and cause unemployment in the legal world as predictable. In contrary, with many useful functions especially in the law research, AI will help lawyers, allowing them to focus more on expertise of their industry and hence to be able to provide more advice of quality.

If AI can help draft a contract based on the data we input, then the lawyer just take time to review and refine the document, in my view, we would be more than welcoming.
