Kyle Hermanson
Vice president and deputy general counsel | Invenergy
Legal team size: 65 overall (15 in my team)
What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Invenergy recently launched an American solar panel manufacturing business, Illuminate USA, which required us to effectively work across a wide variety of legal disciplines such as corporate, finance, international trade, local incentives and permits, federal regulatory, and more. Illuminate USA has already hired more than 1,000 permanent employees in Ohio and manufactured well over 1 million solar panels this year.
Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in the past year?
The renewable energy space has been significantly affected by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 providing long-term stability for renewable energy tax credits, while at the same time imposing new obligations on renewable developers that legal departments must help interpret and implement. In addition to the IRA, the tariff landscape for key renewables supply chains has been dramatically in flux, with 2024 seeing major changes to three US tariffs.
How does your legal team collaborate with other departments within the company?
Invenergy’s legal team collaborates with all phases of Invenergy’s business, from early-stage development and M&A to construction and operations. Invenergy’s projects have long development cycles and even longer operational phases. Providing the right legal support in each phase requires understanding of the different risks a project faces in each stage of development.
