General counsel | Sphera
What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Sphera’s multinational legal team supports our business teams around the globe by overseeing all legal matters. This includes collaborating with our account teams to work alongside customers in contracting for our products and services, managing the company’s IP portfolio, assisting the HR team with global labour and employment issues, administering our compliance programme and providing training, playing key roles in M&A transactions, taking responsibility for corporate governance across the Sphera group of companies, and partnering and contracting with our global vendors.
Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in the past year?
The rapid pace at which the regulatory environment regarding sustainability and supply chains has continued to evolve underscores the importance of a robust and adaptable sustainability programme, as well as the need for the tools and services that Sphera provides. Serving as the General Counsel of a company that assists its customers in collecting, organising, calculating, and reporting their data for compliance with regulatory requirements – while also going beyond compliance to meet their organisational goals – places me in a unique position to truly understand the needs that drive customer decision-making. I am empathetic to their concerns and requirements as they select a partner for their sustainability journey.
How does your legal team collaborate with other departments within the company?
The legal team is well integrated into the business. Our product- and geographically-aligned team members actively participate in strategy and planning meetings with departments across our global organisation, and they also serve as the points of contact for the business when specific legal advice is sought. This collaboration with management, product, technology, services, and other teams allows us to take a proactive approach in advising our business counterparts to prevent issues, while also building relationships within the global organisation. This ensures that we are viewed as safe, trusted partners should any legal challenges arise.
