Salvador Escalón
Chief Legal and Compliance Officer | Millicom International
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
We have a small and agile leadership team that speaks daily and can make and implement decisions quickly. The legal team stays close to the business to anticipate needs and understand the key issues, ensuring we are ready to react quickly to enable business decisions while protecting the company and key stakeholders.
In your opinion, what are the main trends affecting your work now (these can be legal, political, economic or business-based)?
Our company has gone through a major reorganisation, including a 30% personnel reduction. This has led to strong financial results but presents operational challenges and a need to ensure that the existing team can cover all the company’s needs. We are also in the midst of major M&A projects and other transformational changes (e.g., delisting from one stock market) that require significant focus and support from our team.
What strategic priorities are guiding your legal team into 2025?
We are focused on refining our ways of working to adjust to the new organisation, as well as building closer relationships with our operations across Latin America. We also continue to strengthen our compliance programme and use data analytics to direct our resources to where they can best support the organisation.
