How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Managing legal issues during times of instability or crisis requires a well-thought-out strategy to respond to the crises. The crises could be economic, political, natural disasters, or health pandemics. During the covid period, we had to manage our work using Technology. We met as a team using Microsoft Teams and we exchanged documents using Microsoft Outlook. As an organisation, we had built a strong IT architecture to support workflow in and out of the office environment way before covid struck. As a company, we continue to deploy more IT tools to support our business operations.
As a legal team, our strategy is to provide excellent legal services to the company and assist the company to avoid or mitigate risk. To achieve this, emphasis is placed on training the legal team to build the capacity to identify potential legal risks in our business operations and how to deal with them. Another strategy is the continuous call to involve the legal team from the onset of all business transactions. As you may be aware, most corporate lawyers are called into a matter only when there is a problem. My strategy is to get top management to do the reverse.
In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently?
In my view, I see a quick rise of fintech in Ghana. The country is becoming a hub for digital finance, and this has been a major driver of financial inclusion in a way that I find particularly inspiring. From mobile money to digital wallets, I see how technology is transforming lives, and as a legal professional, I believe the role of regulation is critical in balancing innovation with consumer protection. Legal professionals need to ensure that as fintech grows, it’s done in a way that protects both businesses and consumers.
Secondly, I see how businesses and individuals are becoming increasingly aware of intellectual property and its protection. It is an area where lawyers are building their expertise and cashing in quickly.
Another area is cybersecurity. Cybersecurity attacks pose a serious threat to most businesses and there is a growing call for strong regulations in that space.
Are there any causes, business or otherwise, you are passionate about?
I am passionate about proper corporate governance practices. I have noticed that most businesses pay little or no importance to corporate governance. I believe that strong and effective corporate governance helps to cultivate a company’s culture of integrity, leading to positive performance and a sustainable business overall. Essentially, it exists to increase the accountability of all individuals and teams within your company. I’m personally invested in the ongoing fight for better governance and transparency. I believe that the legal community in Ghana has a crucial role to play in advocating for better corporate governance practices in our state institutions and the entire business spectrum in Ghana.
