Torres Unidas is an independent company that provides solutions and services for communication towers and cellular infrastructure in the Andean region. Its portfolio has approximately 1,500 towers strategically located in urban, suburban, highway and rural areas throughout Chile, Peru and Colombia. It was acquired by ATP in a very large transaction under New York law, and this required huge support from the legal department in the areas of due diligence. The legal department of more than 25 lawyers supervises the operations of the business in Peru, Chile and Colombia. Within the legal department, there are legal country heads in all three nations. Staff lawyers report to the legal country heads and the legal country head reports to ‘outstanding, business-orientated’, chief legal officer Gabriel Musso, a key player in the industry who is praised by peers for his strong combination of business and legal approach to all matters. ‘Legal country heads are very important to me to maintain the legal standard across ATP and to supervise all legal work being performed. Operations includes more than 25 lawyers that do not work for the legal department but do work on legal matters’, explains Musso. Since the company’s creation in 2012 the legal team has been driven by a strong anti-corruption and FCPA compliance culture across ATP – Torres Unidas. Working in Latin American countries that have a very high-risk profile requires the legal team to focus on details and structure on their more than 3,000 agreements. ‘The team culture is driven by a strong anti-corruption policy and legal operation details on everyday matters’, says Musso.
