What are the projects you are most proud of working on over the past year?

As Chief Legal Officer, we’ve work in strengthening our legal and ethical foundations. I spearheaded the implementation of the Crime Prevention Compliance System, a critical step in minimising legal risks and ensuring we operate within the bounds of the law. This system has become a cornerstone of our operational integrity.

Recognising the importance of safeguarding personal information, I also led the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Management System. This initiative ensures we meet the highest standards of data privacy, building trust with our clients and partners.

Beyond regulatory compliance, with my team have championed a Social Responsibility Project focused on volunteering, demonstrating our commitment to making a positive impact beyond our corporate walls.

Currently, I’m involved in the ongoing implementation of the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System. This project intends to get the highest ethical standards and ensure transparency in all our dealings.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

My approach is to prioritise a strategic legal framework. This involves rigorous regulatory analysis and compliance, proactive legal risk management, the development of robust contingency plans, and the provision of specialised legal counsel. This ensures not only adherence to legal obligations but also strengthens the organisation’s adaptability and resilience.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

As strategies I would apply the following: keep an inventory of my treatment activities and manage the corresponding risks; implement necessary control measures to ensure proper use of the data; ensure compliance with device usage policies; implement the use of electronic signatures; and perform a standardisation of tasks to increase effectiveness.

My strategic approach to legal management emphasises proactive risk mitigation and operational efficiency. By maintaining a meticulous inventory of treatment activities, implementing robust data control measures, ensuring compliance with device usage policies, leveraging electronic signatures, and standardising tasks, I aim to create a secure, compliant, and highly effective legal environment.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

Within my career, I have two experiences that stand out in my legal career. Firstly, I was recognised as the top-performing legal specialist at Quala Ecuador. Secondly, I received international acclaim from AT&T for my exceptional legal management in administrative and judicial processes against the State. These recognitions, both domestic and international, highlight my ability to navigate complex legal landscapes and deliver impactful results. They underscore my commitment to excellence and my capacity to handle challenging situations with strategic acumen and legal expertise.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

A modern lawyer must have a solid command of corporate law, in addition to knowledge in key areas for the business, must also act as a strategic partner who understands the business objectives of the company, must have negotiation skills, ability to identify, evaluate and mitigate legal risks before they are generated contingent; He must also have clear and precise communication skills to translate complex legal concepts into understandable terms for the corporate and other collaborators of the organisation; he must also have leadership and demonstrate teamwork, but above all, and I believe that the most important thing is to demonstrate ethics and integrity in his actions.
