Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally-friendly activities?

ENGIE has set a clear target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2045. This commitment involves a significant shift towards renewable energy sources, with plans to increase their renewable energy capacity by 4 GW annually, reaching 6 GW by 2025. The company is heavily investing in wind and solar energy projects, which are essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development in local communities.

One of the key areas of focus for ENGIE is the injection of biofuels in the natural gas grids, particularly biomethane. The potential of biomethane to decarbonis the natural gas supply, aiming to produce 10 TWh globally. This initiative not only reduces the carbon footprint but also supports the circular economy by utilising organic waste to generate clean energy.

ENGIE México is also dedicated to environmental stewardship. The company implements aerial fauna monitoring and bird migration studies to ensure that their renewable energy projects do not negatively impact local ecosystems. These efforts demonstrate ENGIE’s commitment to integrating sustainability into their core business operations and contributing to global environmental goals.

It can be challenging to measure a company’s track record in environmentally friendly behavior. What, in your opinion, has mostly been missed in discussions about how green a company is?

One major challenge is the lack of comprehensive and transparent data collection. To accurately measure a company’s environmental performance, reliable data on various metrics such as carbon footprint, energy consumption, waste reduction, and water usage is essential. Companies need to adopt robust data collection and reporting frameworks to provide a clear picture of their environmental impact. Without accurate data, it is difficult to assess the true extent of a company’s green initiatives and identify areas for improvement.

The environmental impact of a company’s supply chain is often overlooked. Many companies may have strong internal sustainability practices, but the practices of their suppliers and partners can significantly affect their overall environmental footprint. It is crucial for companies to extend their sustainability efforts beyond their own operations and work with suppliers to ensure that sustainable practices are implemented throughout the supply chain.
