Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally-friendly activities?
FEMSA Proximity & Health (FP&H) is deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship, recognising the critical need to address climate change and protect natural resources for future generations. The company views its responsibility to mitigate environmental impacts as vital, not only for business success but also for securing a sustainable future for communities and ecosystems worldwide. This commitment is reflected in the three core pillars of its Sustainability Strategy: energy management, circular economy, and water conservation. Below are some of the key initiatives FP&H is developing in each of these areas:
Energy Management: FP&H prioritises energy efficiency throughout its stores and offices, aiming to reduce consumption and improve overall sustainability. Over 17,000 stores now feature intelligent systems, resulting in a 37% reduction in energy usage at OXXO stores and offices since 2009. Currently, 64% of OXXO’s energy is sourced from renewable resources, significantly lowering its carbon footprint and demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Circular Economy: FP&H embraces circular economy principles, focusing on waste reduction and improved recycling efforts. The company has set an ambitious goal to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. To support this, FP&H developed a Packaging Ecodesign Guide for suppliers, encouraging more sustainable packaging practices. In 2023, FP&H successfully recycled 16% of waste generated in its stores and 81% in its distribution centers. The company also runs collection and recycling campaigns with its customers, actively involving local communities and promoting environmental responsibility.
Water Management: Water conservation is a critical focus for FP&H. Several initiatives have been implemented to ensure the responsible use of water across its operations. Recovered water from refrigeration units is repurposed to irrigate nearby green spaces, reducing waste. In stores without access to public drainage systems, FP&H has installed wastewater treatment systems to comply with local regulations and minimise environmental impact. Additionally, 90% of the company’s distribution centers use basket washers that conserve and recycle water, significantly contributing to water savings.
Through these tangible actions across its three pillars, FP&H demonstrates its deep commitment to sustainability and leadership in energy management, circular economy practices, and water conservation.
