Sigma SAFI is one of the largest asset managers in Peru, providing a full range of investment funds. The legal team is made up of three members who report into the vice president of legal matters Karen Ames Vásquez, and deals with a range of complex financial legal matters. These include negotiating and preparing several commercial agreements to provide internal and external legal advice on corporate transactions and supervising corporate legal affairs, helping the company achieve its overall strategic goals. The legal team currently deals with all legal and compliance issues encountered across all of Sigma SAFI’s different investment funds, such as operative leasing, real estate and private equity infrastructure funds. Vásquez regularly reports to the board of directors, establishing the strategy of defence of the interests of the company via administrative procedures and judicial processes in which the company takes part. This involves different competent authorities in the field of securities, banking, financial and corporate markets. One of the legal departments main functions is to standardise the legal criteria that should be adopted for the advice to the organic units in relation to Sigma’s operations and services. Amongst its notable members, associate of legal matters Belén Rodriguez stands out for her contribution to the area of commercial and financial activities, providing tailor-made transactions on different sectors of the Peruvian economy. Proud of developing a problem-solving approach culture in the legal team, Vásquez says: ‘We all are characterised by a “can-do attitude” to work. We are focused on solving problems in the fastest and most proactive way possible. The knowledge of the company and the different business that it performs, as well as its needs and risks, puts the legal team in a privileged situation to provide qualified legal services to Sigma’. The legal team has had significant involvement in Sigma’s recent sale of a US$250m bond through a private placement to AllianzGI to refinance and acquire two wind farms in Peru.
