Givaudan is the largest manufacturer of flavours, fragrances and active cosmetic ingredients in the world. Due to the ever-increasing need for sustainable products, Givaudan is faced with challenges that come with a constantly shifting global regulatory landscape. A large part of Givaudan’s success navigating this environment has been down to the excellent experience and expertise of the company’s legal team, who work in close tandem with the board of directors and executive committee to ensure compliance across the company. Specifically, the legal team’s high productivity is down to its two-pronged structure, which is primarily split into regulatory and compliance. Givaudan’s legal team see themselves as an early warning system for the business, identifying regulatory change that may impact the company well in advance of it taking affect. In conjunction to this future-proofing element, the compliance function is used more to aid the business in securing sustainable ingredients for the company’s various products. The challenge for the legal team now is to build on the successes of the past years by helping to create further shareholder value through profitable, responsible growth and acquisitions to capitalise on Givaudan’s strong market leadership. However, with ambitious financial targets forming an integral aspect of Givaudan’s 2020 strategy, the legal team is already doing its part by advising the company on ways to outpace the market with, at least, 4-5% sales growth.
